This study examines speaking in tongues as a medium of prophecy for restoration in the congregation of GMIT Bethesda Kiukenat in Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, through the perspective of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s theological ethics. In contemporary Christianity, glossolalia is not only understood as a personal spiritual experience but also as a communal religious practice that influences church life. In GMIT “X,” a Reformed congregation influenced by charismatic spirituality, speaking in tongues and prophecy are believed to function as pastoral media that provide comfort, spiritual strengthening, and restoration for congregants facing illness, family conflict, economic struggles, and moral problems. This research aims to analyze how speaking in tongues is understood and practiced as a medium of prophecy and to reflect critically on its ethical implications through Bonhoeffer’s concepts of responsibility and communal life. This study employs a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed descriptively and interpretatively. The findings reveal that speaking in tongues and prophecy strengthen faith, solidarity, and spiritual restoration within the congregation. However, the practice also shows the potential for spiritual subjectivism and dependence on charismatic figures. Bonhoeffer’s perspective emphasizes that spiritual experiences must remain Christ-centered, tested within the community, and directed toward responsible Christian living. The novelty of this study lies in integrating charismatic practices with Bonhoeffer’s theological ethics within a Reformed church context influenced by charismatic spirituality.
